Geothermal Infrastructure Can Turn Saudi AI Ambitions Into Operating Capacity

From AI ambition to operating capacity: 1.9 GW target, with geothermal power and cooling turning land and power access into operating data centres

Saudi Arabia’s AI ambitions must be measured by operating infrastructure, not announcement volume, according to Taranis Capital’s analysis.

The firm highlights HUMAIN’s target of 1.9 gigawatts of data-centre capacity by 2030 and a land position covering 211 sites with access to 14 gigawatts of power. However, land and power access are development options—not delivered capacity.

Taranis says public disclosures provide limited detail about grid interconnections, generation contracts, power-purchase agreements and bankable customer commitments. This matters because AI training clusters require continuous electricity, which intermittent generation cannot provide without storage or firm backup.

Geothermal infrastructure could help close that gap. It can deliver round-the-clock power while supporting efficient, lower-water cooling through stable subsurface temperatures.

Combined with contracted customers and financeable offtake agreements, geothermal infrastructure could help convert Saudi Arabia’s AI megawatts into operating data centres. The Kingdom has capital, land and ambition; the next test is integrating power, cooling, connectivity and demand.
