Amazon Web Services has confirmed that its first Saudi Arabian cloud infrastructure region remains scheduled to launch in December 2026, advancing the Kingdom’s push for locally hosted cloud and artificial-intelligence capacity.
First announced in 2024, the AWS Region represents more than US$5.3 billion in planned investment. It will allow government agencies, regulated industries, startups and enterprises to run applications and store data inside Saudi Arabia, supporting data-residency requirements while reducing reliance on infrastructure outside the Kingdom.
AWS is separately expanding its partnership with HUMAIN, the artificial-intelligence company owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The companies plan to make up to 50 megawatts of capacity available within the Kingdom’s first AI Zone by 2028.
The AI Zone will incorporate AWS Trainium chips and NVIDIA infrastructure for model training and inference. HUMAIN’s ALLAM Arabic large language model is also expected to become available through Amazon Bedrock, while HUMAIN Fabric will be distributed through AWS Marketplace.
The AWS Region and HUMAIN AI Zone are related elements of Saudi Arabia’s digital strategy, but they are distinct projects. Together, they expand domestic cloud services, advanced computing and sovereign AI capabilities.
Amazon’s Saudi footprint also creates a geothermal infrastructure opportunity, because every new cloud region and AI Zone requires dependable electricity and continuous cooling at industrial scale.
In Saudi Arabia’s climate, cooling performance becomes inseparable from energy efficiency and water conservation. Conventional systems must reject enormous quantities of heat while operating through periods of extreme outdoor temperature.
Geothermal infrastructure could provide firm power and stable subsurface temperatures for cooling, reducing exposure to grid constraints, water-intensive heat rejection and ambient heat. As Saudi Arabia attracts hyperscalers, the competitive advantage will not come only from acquiring chips. It will come from building the power and thermal infrastructure that allows those chips to operate reliably, efficiently and economically.
