Alberta’s AI Ambition Could Export Canadian Energy Expertise to Saudi Arabia

Alberta’s push to become a global hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure could create an export opportunity extending well beyond data centres.

In a recent interview with the Calgary Herald, Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish positioned data centres as a new way to convert Alberta’s energy resources into higher-value digital services. The province is targeting as much as C$100 billion in investment, supported by abundant natural gas, available land and decades of experience delivering complex energy projects.

But Alberta’s most valuable export may not be the energy itself. It may be specialized expertise developed around it.

Saudi Arabia is already a global energy powerhouse, with decades of world-class experience in drilling, reservoir modelling and large-scale hydrocarbon development. Canadian companies have complementary strengths in applying those foundational subsurface skills to geothermal energy, underground thermal storage, and the advanced power and cooling systems required by high-density AI infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia is a natural partner for that specialized knowledge. The Kingdom is investing heavily in sovereign AI, data centres and new energy systems under Vision 2030. Its extreme climate also makes reliable power and efficient cooling central infrastructure challenges—areas where geothermal-enabled solutions and behind-the-fence generation can play a significant role.

Canada and Saudi Arabia recently agreed to deepen cooperation in both energy and artificial intelligence. The agreements create a timely commercial pathway for Canadian engineering and geothermal companies to participate in Saudi projects—not simply as equipment suppliers, but as development and operating partners in these emerging applications.

The opportunity is to build a two-way energy and technology corridor. Saudi capital, scale and demand can accelerate large-scale projects, while Alberta contributes proven experience executing energy infrastructure in difficult environments and adapting geothermal and thermal-storage technologies for high-density computing.

Alberta’s domestic data-centre buildout can serve as the proving ground. Technologies demonstrated at home—from behind-the-fence generation to geothermal-enabled cooling—can then be adapted for hot-climate markets across Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf.

The province’s AI strategy should therefore be viewed as more than an investment-attraction program. Properly developed, it could become a launch platform for exporting the next generation of Canadian energy expertise into complementary markets.
