Canada and Saudi Arabia Enter a New Phase of Commercial Engagement

Canada's first PM visit to Saudi Arabia in 26 years sparks $1B in agreements, opening doors for Canadian expertise in energy transition, geothermal, and advanced industrial solutions.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Saudi Arabia marks a significant reset in the relationship between Canada and the Kingdom.

The trip, described by business leaders as a major step forward, is the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to Saudi Arabia in 26 years. It follows several years of diplomatic tension after a 2018 dispute that disrupted official relations and slowed trade discussions.

The focus now appears to be practical engagement.

Carney met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and participated in the Saudi Arabia-Canada Investment Forum in Jeddah, where Canadian and Saudi organizations signed 13 commercial agreements and memorandums of understanding valued at more than $1 billion.

For Canadian businesses, the opportunity extends well beyond oil and gas. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy is driving major investment in infrastructure, mining, critical minerals, health care, tourism, education, aviation, culture and technology.

That shift creates a stronger case for Canadian companies with expertise in energy systems, engineering, project development and industrial innovation.

The visit also comes with political complexity. Canadian officials said human rights and consular issues were raised during meetings, while emphasizing that engagement does not mean endorsement.

For Source Geothermal, the renewed Canada-Saudi relationship is notable because Saudi Arabia is becoming one of the world’s most ambitious markets for infrastructure, energy transition and advanced industrial development.

As AI, data centres and large-scale cooling demand reshape global energy needs, stronger commercial ties between Canada and Saudi Arabia could open new pathways for geothermal, critical infrastructure and next-generation energy partnerships.
